How to Get Mice Out of Your Yard

What Attracts Mice to Yards?

Multiple factors attract mice to yards. Perhaps the most popular attraction is easily obtainable food. Mostly foragers, mice seek opportunities to feed wherever they go. Attractive foods include seeds, grains, plants, etc. Gardens, therefore, are prime targets for mice.

The omnivorous creatures will also attempt to make a meal out of almost anything edible, including carrion. Other potential meals include pet and livestock feed, as well as leftovers found in trash. It is best to act quickly when mice are spotted in the yard, as the rodents can easily contaminate human food and water supplies.

Damage & Health Risks

Mice in the yard are problematic for various reasons. Not only do the rodents dig up landscaping and contribute to other cosmetic and structural damage, but the small animals also transmit disease and produce generally unclean living conditions.

Known diseases that mice can harbor include Hantavirus, hemorrhagic fever, and meningitis. Contraction is often as simple as breathing in dust particles formed from mouse droppings. Additionally, yards infested by mice put nearby buildings at risk of infestation. Eventually, mice in the yard may gain access to the indoors and construct nests to continue multiplying.

Removal

Though a few irritating mice found in the yard may seem essentially harmless, a yard infestation left to grow can eventually overrun buildings on the premises as well as surrounding properties. Removing attractive yard elements is one way to help prevent this worst-case scenario. However, residents with current infestations should immediately call a professional wildlife removal and prevention team to successfully resolve the problem and stop the mice in the yard from reaching overwhelming numbers.
