The Food White Footed Mice Eat & How They Store Food

What Do White Footed Mice Eat?

The white footed mouse diet mainly consists of grass, acorns, tree nuts, grains, and fruit. These omnivores may also eat crickets, flies, and caterpillars when available.

Storing Food

During the winter, a large portion of the white footed mouse diet comes from food caches. The rodents collect seeds and nuts during warmer weather to sustain them during the colder months when food is scarce. To aid in gathering, these mice have cheeks that can expand to carry nuts and seeds to nesting sites.

White Footed Mice in Homes

Although they would rather live outdoors for most of the year, white footed mice often take shelter in homes to avoid severe weather. While they may eat stored goods in pantries, most of the white footed mouse diet comes from foods the pests gather outside.

Finding stored nuts and berries indoors is a good sign that these mice are present. When the pests stash their food inside walls, drawers, or other hidden areas, insect infestations may develop in these locations as a result.

Controlling Mice

White footed mice are strong climbers and spend a good amount of their time in trees. They may enter homes through holes in roofs, so sealing any openings helps to keep mice out. Storing foods common to the white footed mouse diet in airtight containers may also prevent the rodents from nesting in the house.
